Charles' story - Memories in Place
Charles’ story and photographs were inspired by his visit to the Somme battlefields in the winter of 2010. Walking through these fields, Charles realised how powerful and compelling the conflict of almost a century ago continues to be. As a result, Charles embarked on a photographic journey through the WWI battlefields of France and Belgium in which he captured the emotional impact that names and places, such as Paeschendaele and Pozieres, have for Australians through a series of photogaphs. The images will form part of a national exhibition in 2014, designed to commemorate the centenary of World War I. Charles is no stranger to theatres of war; between 1992 and 1997 he worked under the banner of the International Committee of the Red Cross, documenting crisis situations in the conflict zones of Afghanistan, Malawi, Somalia, and Chechnya. In addition, the Australian Armed Forces and the United States Marine Corps have allowed him to record people in extreme situations.
